Piglet Basics

Make Your Piglet a Home:

With his own allocated dwelling place, welcome your piglet home. For small piglets, this first location is usually transitory and can be a play pen, crate, or any small space where the pig can be confined, such as a bathroom or laundry room.

Choose a location with easy-to-clean walls and floors (such as tile or linoleum). Choose a location that provides privacy, is free of drafts, and can be maintained at a suitable temperature.

Bonding With Your Piglet:

Your pig will most likely appear timid and afraid when he arrives. He may flee, hide, deny treats, or screech at you. This is very normal. Your youngster has abandoned his mother, siblings, and everything he has ever known.

He’s probably the lone pig in this odd place, which is filled with strange scents and strange people.

Dogs and Other Pets:

I have Great Pyrenees that were bred to be livestock guardian dogs (LGD), but I don’t completely trust them. When it comes to dogs and pigs, extreme caution is advised. A dog and a pig should never be left alone.

Realistic Expectation of Size

Piglets do not stay small for long, and they grow up to become adults, just like any other baby mammal. There is no pig that will stay as little as a Yorkshire terrier or even a fully matured 25 pound pig.

Do you have a fenced-in area where the pig can root and roam safely and securely? Pigs must be able to graze, exercise, root, lay in grass, snort and sniff the air, investigate, and do other things that pigs do.

You’ll need a yard with grass (and possibly dirt) where they can be contained and protected from predators. Pigs require access to the outdoors to keep their senses stimulated and avoid boredom.

Pigs are loyal and create strong social relationships; they are the fourth smartest animal on the planet; and when they are adults, they are quiet. They don’t bark, Pigs get along with most animals, Pigs don’t have fleas,

Pigs have a strong immune system, Pigs are affectionate, Pigs don’t chew on things like dogs do, Pigs don’t require rabies, Pigs don’t have a lot of vet costs, Pigs aren’t finicky eaters, and Pigs don’t run up to you.

Cons

Pigs may be naughty, especially when it comes to eating. Pigs can be cunning when it comes to food, and you will be cunning when it comes to food as well. Pigs are always like three-year-olds; they can squeal at 110 decibels, they can be obstinate, and they lack the desire to please that dogs do.
